Valerie Sutton
CSMW Director
DAC@SignWriting.orgSignWriting was first invented by Valerie Sutton in Denmark in 1974. It is one of five sections of Sutton Movement Writing, a system for reading and writing body movement. Sutton grew up in professional ballet training in Southern California, and first invented DanceWriting, preserving the historic Bournonville Schools, a ballet system used by the Royal Danish Ballet. In 1974, while she was teaching the Royal Danish Ballet to read and write dance, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen, Lars von der Lieth, asked her to develop a way to read and write the movements of signed languages. This was the beginning of SignWriting.
Sutton has continued to work full time with SignWriting since 1981, publishing the SignWriter Newspaper from 1981-1984, working with Lucinda O'Grady Batch to coordinate the DAC in 1986-1988, with Richard Gleaves, to assist the development of the SignWriter Computer Program, and with Darline Clark, to develop Children's Stories written in ASL. Sutton is the sole designer and webmaster of two web sites: the SignWritingSite and the DanceWritingSite. The first posting of the SignWritingSite was on September 20, 1996. Sutton posts free lessons online every first and third Monday of each month, and hosts the SignWriting Email List, informing list members about new developments.
